While Lipitor has been proven to be an effective medication to help lower cholesterol, a recent study has provided evidence that strawberries are the latest ally in the fight for healthy living. Researchers from the University of Salamanca in Spain have investigated the effects of how consuming a daily intake of these nutritious fruits can significantly reduce your cholesterol.
The professionals set up an experiment in which were added to the daily intake of 23 volunteers for the period of one month. After comparing blood samples taken prior to the study and after, the researchers found that total cholesterol had decreased by nearly 9 percent, while the level of low-density lipoproteins, or "bad cholesterol," had dropped by 13.72 percent. Triglycerides, which is a form of body fat often attributed to high cholesterol also decreased by more than 20 percent while high-density lipoproteins, or "good cholesterol," remained the same.
Maurizio Battino, a researcher at the Marche Polytechnic University in Italy and director of the study, felt the results were a groundbreaking stride in the effort to lower cholesterol.
"This is has been published that supports the protective role of the bioactive compounds in strawberries in tackling recognized markers and risk factors for cardiovascular diseases." Battino issued in a press statement.
The abundance of antioxidants and anthocyanins in strawberries are the main sources believed to help lower cholesterol and boost levels of general plasma lipid profiles, which are tests that determine a healthy cholesterol quantity. Fifteen days after subjects stopped their increased intake of strawberries, their cholesterol parameters returned to what they were before the experiment.
Taking control of your cholesterol
Changing your dietary habits is an important step towards keeping your cholesterol levels under control. Make sure to cut out high fatty foods and tobacco and limit your alcohol consumption if you are looking to to lower your cholesterol. While adding strawberries to your diet is a great way to help offset the condition, sometimes further medication is needed to help treatment.
